Hiking in the sun...with an umbrella ☂ . I wrote about it for @GossamerGear and a last minute decision to bring one of their reflective umbrellas on the Pacific Crest Trail (PCT) with me in 2017. If you’re hiking a sunny, exposed trail anytime soon — PCT, CDT, CT, Hayduke, Camino...you may want to bring one too ☂ . It will save your energy, skin, water, patience and stamina... “Mom never said, ...Make sure to have an umbrella for sunny days,’ but after thru-hiking the Pacific Crest Trail (PCT) with one, I know now a hiking umbrella is a brilliant idea....one last-minute addition...Gossamer Gear’s Liteflex Hiking Umbrella...ended up being the most unexpected source of joy and relief along my many miles.” Full story in bio link above ⬆️🤓 #gossamergear #pacificcrestrail #pct2019 #pct2017 #p3 #deserthiking #optoutside #hikingumbrella #liteflexhikingumbrella #hikehappy #happypeoplehike #deserthiking #forceofnature #p3hikers #pcta #leavenotrace #outtherepodcast

Two of my favorites things are the outdoors and stories about big questions and the human condition. @outtherepodcast is a space for those two things. Today the show turns 4 and there are so many stories to hear and enjoy. Have a listen or subscribe wherever you get your podcasts. It might just lead your outdoors or inward thinking!
There are a lot of places that bring us peace and/or happiness in nature. They’re near or far; warm, snowy, colorful and even dormant and colorless at times. This month @outtherepodcast wants to start a discussion about you and nature using the hashtag #EmpoweredByNature Follow along for cool posts, ideas and conversation under that hashtag from the show’s ambassadors @adventurelikeagirl @nonbinarynomads @middlewest_mama @tiny_green_hands on how the outdoors can be a tool for the empowerment of oneself and others. Join the convo at #EmpoweredByNature and by commenting on this month’s posts. And for now, have a listen to the latest episode...an Ivy League PhD who finds happiness and perspective when he decides to take some time to enjoy research and planting trees 🌲 Full link in bio 👆...
This weekend I met up with some old friends from the Appalachian Trail (AT) and some new friends for a weekend of backpacking and hiking. It was a chilly but beautiful winter hike in the #PisgahNationalForest and #ShiningRockWilderness of North Carolina along the Art Loeb Trail (and connecting trails). At night, temps dipped well below freezing but with many layers, good friends, reliable gear and hot tea, again I discovered the body will do what we challenge it with #MyBodyCan (a topic @outtherepodcast is all about this month). Here’s to winter adventures with good people and warm clothes! 🎒 🥶 🥾 #outtherepodcast #mybodycan #womenwhohike #optoutside
I’ve been collaborating with @outtherepodcast to help with their inaugural ambassador program. The ambassadors @adventurelikeagirl @nonbinarynomads @middlewest_mama @tiny_green_hands have been sharing great stuff and now introduce themselves on the latest episode of the show. Have a listen (link in bio above 👆) to their compelling stories. They are facing tough issues like cancer, social anxiety, body image and post party depression and motherhood and finding new confidence and comfort in the outdoors. This episode is their voices but speaks to the idea that #MyBodyCan (even when things are rough), a hashtag/theme that #outtherepodcast invites anyone to be a part of this month. Episode available on iTunes, Stitcher, outtherepodcast.com, Spotify, Google Play Music, Stitcher, and RadioPublic. #outtherepodcast #optoutside
Thanks to all who read this story about Pacific Trail Angels (PCT) trail angels 👼 , Jack and Neoma Wisdom, who lost their home in the Camp Fire, the most devastating in CA history. There is still time to read their story and donate to their GoFundMe campaign as they start anew after losing their home and everything in it. If you need a way to start the year off on a benevolent foot, here’s an option — read full story in bio link above and donate. 👆 Last month, 68 people donated over $1,500 and others sent gear including @ospreypacks and @lekiusa Thank you for reading and donating your money and time to the Wisdoms’ story. Hearing from folks with regards to this story highlights kindness from strangers and the persistence of trail magic. Happy 2019 everyone! #pcta #pct #pcttrailangels #pacificcresttrail #trailmagic #thetrek #ospreypacks #lekiusa
I met the Wisdoms, two longtime trail angels 👼 , on the Pacific Crest Trail (PCT) in 2017. They recently lost their home in the recent Camp Fire in Paradise, CA. They have spent 10+ years supporting hikers on the PCT and injecting kindness & generosity into the hiking community and countless lives. If you’re looking to feel inspired by two wonderful & positive people, I hope you will read.
